In Argentina’s Tucuman province, elections are more than just a democratic exercise. They are a window into the complex web of power and influence that governs the country’s political landscape. In recent years, Tucuman has emerged as a key battleground for political parties vying for control at the national level. But beneath the surface, there are secrets and subterfuge that shape the outcome of these elections.

At the heart of this secretive world is the province’s political machine, known as the “peronista” party. Led by a network of powerful figures, the peronista party wields significant influence over Tucuman’s politics and has been accused of using questionable tactics to maintain its hold on power. These tactics include vote-buying, ballot stuffing, and other forms of electoral fraud.

One of the most infamous examples of this was the 2015 gubernatorial election, which saw Juan Manzur, the peronista candidate, narrowly defeat José Cano of the opposition Cambiemos party. The election was marred by allegations of fraud, including the discovery of bags of pre-marked ballots and reports of vote-buying by peronista operatives. Despite these allegations, Manzur was declared the winner and went on to become governor of Tucuman.
